What is Recycling? Definition, Process, and Benefits

Recycling is the process of collecting, sorting, and transforming used materials—such as plastic, paper, glass, and metal—into raw materials for new products. This circular system reduces landfill accumulation, conserves natural resources like trees and oil, and significantly lowers environmental pollution.

How the Recycling Process Works

The recycling cycle is generally broken down into three key stages:

  1. Collection and Sorting: Discarded materials are gathered via curbside bins or drop-off centers and separated by type.

  2. Processing and Manufacturing: Items are cleaned and broken down (e.g., melting plastic into pellets or pulping paper) to create "raw" materials for new goods.

  3. Closing the Loop: The process is complete when consumers purchase products made from recycled content.
